It’s pretty incredible for an incumbent Senator, riding a massive fundraising advantage and the establishment backing, to lose in his Party’s caucuses.
It’s exactly what happened last night in Colorado when Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet lost the precinct straw polls to former state House Speaker Andrew Romanoff. It’s a demonstration of just how sick Colorado Democrats are of the Washington mess, Bennet’s special interest connections, and Congress’s failure to deliver on progressive change.
From the AP:
Colorado Democrats snubbed Sen. Michael Bennet in precinct straw polls in favor of a former state House speaker who railed against national Democratic leadership. Andrew Romanoff defeated Bennet handliy, even though Bennet swamped him in fundraising and had the blessing of top Democrats, including President Barack Obama.
The president campaigned in Denver last month for Bennet, who is considered one of the more vulnerable Democratic senators this fall. But the star power didn’t sway Colorado Democrats who said they’re disenchanted with party leaders in Congress.
“The same people still own and run Washington, no matter what party,” said 72-year-old Denver Democrat Jeanette McIntosh, who chose Romanoff.
Romanoff won despite a massive amount of pressure and effort from the Washington establishment to keep him out. The President did three fundraising events in CO, the DNC sent hundreds of paid staffers, and all the big money PAC interests gave generously to Bennet.
But, at the end of the day, Colorado Democrats want a Democrat who will fight for progressive ideas and will work to change Washington. A leader who won’t take corporate PAC money, and isn’t going to play the same-old Washington games to get elected.
With last night’s big result, Romanoff has the momentum. Now please help him get the resources he needs to win. Donate now.
