Flip Cam to make citizen video journalism even quicker

In an exciting development for decentralized citizen journalism, the Flip video camera from Cisco will include wi-fi starting in early 2010. Wireless internet access will now enable instantaneous video sharing via the web. While many smart phones already offer the ability to record video and directly upload to YouTube or Facebook, the Flip cam will offer dedicated hardware for the task. Mashable’s Ben Parr provides more insight:

The next-generation Flip MinoHD, due in the first half of 2010, includes double the memory, a larger screen, and direct Facebook uploads. Now according to Pocket Lint (and confirmed by Cisco), the Flip will, for the first time, include Wi-Fi.

The development doesn’t surprise us: this is an area where Cisco is proficient, and with the iPhone 3GS changing the face of video (YouTube uploads rose by 400% right after the iPhone 3GS after its release), the Flip had to evolve to match. You won’t be able to upload video from anywhere, but it does make it a lot easier.

There’s one more new feature that shouldn’t be overlooked: the new Flip will increase its screen real-estate by have a sliding screen that reveals the record and menu buttons.

    I bought one of these before I went to NYC last summer, it was fantastic. No lugging bulky video cameras and tapes, plus the 2 hour recording time was perfect. I video taped the ferry ride from Battery Park to Liberty and Ellis Island then downloaded it to my laptop back at the apartment and emailed it to friends and family. Will not be without it.

    This technology is constantly revolving but this will have great use and of course as all tech is possibly a double edged sword but can’t think what that would be on this.
