More Clinton Angst At Convention Than I Expected
After being here in Denver all day yesterday, last night and today, I am running into far more Clinton supporters who are upset or have some angst about Barack Obama than I thought I would. To be clear I am not talking about the Clinton Campaign. I am talking about Clinton Delegates and supporters. Some are upset that she isn’t on the ticket. Others are still convinced that Obama can not win. I had thought Obama would have accomplished more towards healing these wounds by now. Perhaps after tomorrow night, with Hillary Clinton’s speech, we will see these delegates soften and move in stronger fashion to Obama’s corner. But right now, it looks like a lot more work needs to be done over the next 4 days to heal the divisions in the party and leave Denver unified. These next four days are more important than I had thought.
Please, oh please, get OVER IT, ok? Can we make this about the country’s future vs. bruised egos? How petty. This is a HUGE election. Sad.
Hilary die-hards (or “die-nevers” may be more appropriate) have left Barack in a completely unwinnable situation–try to move on from the primary and he’s accused of not showing her the proper “respect;” show too much deference to her, and he threatens dislodging his own narrative.
How much resepct is enough? At one point do people feel that they’ve gotten their pound of flesh? I understand that people were invested in Clinton’s campaign. I understand that they’re heartbroken, and as an Obama fan and supporter since 2004, I would feel similar alienated and aggreieved in their shoes.
But cleaving the party in two on the sword of identity politics gains us nothing except a John McCain presidency. And nobody knows that more accutely than John McCain (with the possible exception of Steve Schmidt.)
She doesn’t believe in him or his candidacy, never has, never will. All this genuflecting to the Clintons has backfired, as instead of healing it emboldens. Her message is clear: “I’ll say what I’m supposed to say, but come Nov 5, it’s my party again, not yours.”
Hillary released her delegates… raised money for Obama… campaigned for Obama… etc. Let her say whatever the hell she wants. Let Bill say whatever the hell he wants. And let Hillary get a roll call. Once Obama is officially crowned then you can harp on this situation. Until then, let the voters speak their minds. Party unity? It would have been an Obama/Clinton ticket. Don’t go telling me Obama’s camp has been accomodating to Hillary. They haven’t been!
Sometimes, your candidate doesn’t win. If you don’t have the emotional stability to accept this, maybe electoral politics aren’t best for you.
I think we will know more tomorrow night after Hillary speaks. Hopefully her words will cause her supporters to move towards Obama with more enthusiasm. That often happens at these things and I believe that Hillary intends to do everything she can. I was just sort of taken aback by some of the tension here. Much more than I expected.
Buffy, Amen!
Clinton supporters need to BUCK up, like we did after Dean.
Heaven’s sake. The reason she didn’t win is she is not the right woman to bring the proper tone and change for our country.
I feel I can read her like a book and Zack is right on. She hasn’t had any sincere change of heart since she stupidly claimed McCain had a lifetime of experience, and viciously claimed Obama had none that would cause him be an effective leader.
She earned votes but her integrity is lost.
Went canvassing in my precinct here yesterday and the Hillary supporters have moved on… STRONG support for obama.
No one knew that Thursday was the 45th historic anniversary of MLK’s I have a dream speech, so they all want to watch now.
I think that party unity is important. But does Obama really need ALL of the disgruntled Clinton supporters on board in order to win? I’m sure the Obama campaign crunched the numbers and they feel comfortable with where they are at. I mean, how many of these disgruntled Clinton supporters are in California, Texas, Florida, and New York? I’ll bet it is a large majority. My feeling is that Colorado and Virginia are the two critical states for the Obama campaign, and I don’t think there are enough disgruntled Clinton supporters to alter the outcomes of these two states.
I hate to sound harsh, but one wants to tell these people (in the rudest terms possible) to grow up and get over themselves. Clinton fought a good, strong campaign and got beat. Soundly. What makes these PUMA types think they have some alternative goal to work towards, besides getting on board with electing Obama?
No, really. I’d like to know.
i am also skeptical about how many of these disgruntled types are represented in the general electorate, although I may be kidding myself. I guess we’ll see after this week. Maybe Denver is the funeral for hurt feelings.
mom in n va,
But Obama has little to no experience. I don’t want a politician to lie and say he is when he isn’t. She called it like she saw it. Obama is way to inexperienced, and what little I know of him and his wife I don’t really care for to be honest.
McCain has the maverick record in Congress. He’s the one that has been working with Dems to get things done. Obama since going to washington has been riding the coat tails of the older members while hording all the credit.
My entire family from NY and AZ were prepared to vote for Hillary and after this primary we are all going to vote McCain.
” I had thought Obama would have accomplished more towards healing these wounds by now.”
Those people don’t want their self-inflicted wounds healed. Their martyrdom is their glory.
@AZDem:
“McCain has the maverick record in Congress. He’s the one that has been working with Dems to get things done.”
I trust your eight year nap has left you all refreshed. You’ll need the energy to go and find out what McCain has been up to. Hint: Think of Karl Rove looking very sleepy and satisfied.
He has little to no WASHINGTON EXPERIENCE!! — I said LIFE experience. The kind that MAKES you a LEADER, not makes you a follower (like Ms. Clinton became).
Let’s look what Washington experience has gotten us:
A load of politicians taken in by the shifty policies of an administration BENT like Hell on going to war.
I wasn’t fooled. Obama wasn’t fooled. Russ Feingold wasn’t fooled. 23 Washington politicians were WISE, like Obama and knew, like the majority of retired generals, that invading Iraq was a huge mistake.
Leadership and judgement is required, NOT Washington experience.
Here is a list of the brave LEADERS who Ms. Clinton could not bring herself to stand by, because of her ambition to be president. BOTH of these calculations were incorrect.
She has neither the judgement not leadership required in this delicate time. We need a cool head, a wise head. Obama offers such judgement.

Sore losers will get the Supreme Court they deserve.
Also, AZ Dem,
You said, “what little I know of him and his wife I don’t really care for to be honest.” Of course not.
The little you know was passed on by biased sources, perhaps ie. his Clinton opponent, or the media – biased toward conflict.
I suggest reading his books (which he wrote himself and are page turners) or watching the films from the convention and Michelle Obama’s speech, so you can learn where he comes from, particularly what he did as TOP student in Harvard upon graduation. This fact and story alone is enough to convince of his leadership abilities and his genuine sincerity and heart.
i hope you can take the time.
This election will be won by getting independents (such as myself) and Republicans (like my husband) to vote for your nominee. There is no way that Senator Clinton can carry us. But we are both campaigning for Obama. Clinton fans need to realize that she was and is and always will be unelectable because of her high negative ratings. And the primary, and her fans actions now, just increase that negativity.
My mother always said thank God the Democrats are too stupid to win elections — I am beginning to understand what she meant!
A word to Obama supporters: You called the Clintons’ racists for running against Obama, you calles us Hillary supporters racists for questioning the wisdom of nominating an inexperienced candidate with no accomplishments. Now, you want us to get over it and fall in line. You are Obama’s worst enemies and have done for him what millions of dollars in negative ads against him could not have done. Obama and his campaign stoked the race-baiting and now you all are paying the price. I am a long-time Democrat who has never voted for a Republican. I will, this time.
Hillary Clinton would have beaten Barack handily in the primary
- if she knew how to manage her campaign,
- if she knew how to run a campaign on a budget
- if she had reached out to her grassroots supporters before the 11th hour
- if she had had the common sense to plan ahead properly
- if she had not surrounded herself with the likes of Mark Penn
But she did none of these things, and so she lost.
The buck stops with Hillary.
Hate to break the news – but hubby aside, Senator Clinton’s resumé is as thin as Obamas. Throw in her years with Bubba – and it only gets as thick as her calves with failure after failure. The healthcare debacle was a laugh, and she certainly showed her true feminist colors in defense of Monica Lewinsky.
But the PUMAs are correct in that Obama’s supporters would have been more easily swayed – so it looks like President McCain and the GOP will be laughing all the way to the bank.
At least Obama saved our democracy from the Clinton/Bush dynasties – George/Bill/GW/Hillary/Jeb/Chelsea…
So he may just pull this independent’s vote for upsetting that cart. Until I remember that he has NO experience whatsoever.
Seriously – is this like a joke or what? What’s up with the Democrats?
Btw, is the initial debate set for Ole Miss just so the media can focus on Southern racism rather than Obama’s dismal performance?
Obama/Biden is so reminiscent of Bush/Cheney that it’s actually frightening. Have any of his supporters listened to their man attempt to speak without the aid of a teleprompter?
He appears as retarded as our current POTUS. Uhm… uh… duhr….
Keep the change, buddy.
Jake, enough with that sexist crap about calves. This is what drives Senator Clinton’s supporters wild, but they don’t realize it’s coming from GOPs and not from Obama’s supporters.
And, yikes! Have you checked out McCain’s calves?
Ha – I declared myself as an independent.
And I doubt my little comment mocking her physique did anywhere near as much damage to the feminist movement as HIllary’s unrelenting assault on poor, innocent Monica Lewinski.
Now whatcha got?
there’s nothing you can say to mighty Jake…lol
jakehc the independent…lol your a clown
i declared you a clown, watcha got tough guy? ..lol
Btw, did anyone actually stay awake through Michelle’s speech? Apparently she and Obama have dedicated their entire lives turning away money to “stick to her roots” on the Southside. That and her dad died, and then died again, and then died some more – and then I think he showed up on stage and actually died right there?
I thought the Obamas were loaded – I got get me one of them community service jobs!
I am a clown – click on my name
Michelle’s dad just called – he said to tell Michelle that tonight was the first time he’s ever been proud of her. Also, he wanted to know how the Obama’s favorite verse in the gospel of Matthew applies to Barack’s actual brother.
Or does he just need to work a little harder and apply himself over there in the 3rd world to pull ahead?
Jake-Your attempt at humor saddens me. I lost a parent when I was six years old. I suggest that if you had experienced such a loss you would never, ever write the way you are writing tonight.
Watch your step around here, Jake. Lots of sensitive types here. It’s their time, you know…they’re entitled.
Hey Joe, where are going with that PUMA in your hand ???
What’s the purpose of this post, Mr Trippi? Where’s the need to bloat a dead media narrative that’s based upon lies, deceit and outright Rovian hackery?
What the hell is wrong with you, man?
My wife and I are both former life-long moderate Republicans who be voting for Barack Obama in the general election. The GOP has pushed the pro-life agenda of the vocal “Moral Minority” over the pro-choice stance of the GOP majority for far too long. This election is for keeps with respect to women’s rights.
The more you denigrate her, the more determined voters like me will work against Obama. I will not vote for John Cain but I will not vote for Obama. You want my vote then control your mouth.
It is not about Hillary Clinton; it is about the dismissive and vitriolic comments on threads like this.
Correction
I will not vote for John McCain.
Seriously, any person who thinks that voting for John McCain is a better alternative than voting for Obama is a fool.
Three words: Roe versus Wade.
If the right of a woman to make her own life choices and not have the courts make them for her is important to you, know this: you will NOT secure those rights by voting for McCain.
Please keep calling us cranky, racist old white bitches. And please keep saying that uniting the party is Hillary’s responsibility. It’s been such a great strategy so far, as evidenced by the polls.
McCain ahead by 2 points in Gallup today – that’s AFTER bambi’s lame VP pick and DURING his own CONvention! NO BOUNCE, unless you think SINKING is bouncing – lol! Kerry, the LOSER, was way ahead of Bush at this point in 2004. Bad omen for the barfycrats.
barfy’s going DOWNHILL at his own CONvention! The more people get to know him, the less they like him – and the less they TRUST him. All those lies, all those flip-flops, all that strong-arming and threatening of delegates, all that cheating and fraud, all those insipid teleprompter speeches, all that “duh uh um um um” when he doesn’t have his handy-dandy teleprompter, all that arrogance and snobbery and ignorance, all that looking down his nose at real people – there’s just nothing to like about this guy – and there’s certainly NO REASON ON EARTH that this fraud – this fake – this BFF of terrorists and criminals and hate-spewing “preachers” should ever be elected to dog-catcher, much less senator or president! OMG!
Americans are catching on – fast – and the republicans haven’t even started the onslaught yet! barfy’s circling the toilet bowl – soon to be treading sewer water! Pass the popcorn!
Too bad, democrats – when you decided that being democratic was just “so 20th century” you lost most of the REAL Democratic Party – when you decided that intimidation and cheating and voter/election fraud were going to be your new MO, when you decided to put up the weakest, most corrupt idiot you could, you LOST the election that should have been a no-brainer to win. LOSERS – ALL OF YOU!
OK. Let me be blunt. Get over the drama or prepare for a President McCain Administration. To Hillary, Ted Kennedy lost presidential elections and had much more of an impact than he would have if he were President in the Senate. If you truly want to leave a legacy, then the Senate is for you.
OK, beasleybrother. Let me be blunt. Get over it – bambi is gonna lose – McCain landslide. I doubt barky will even get 5 of the “57 states” he thinks we have.
So, again – YOU. GET. OVER. IT. Maybe barky can continue his career in the Senate after his humiliating loss – only this time maybe he’ll finally realize voting “present” is NOT accomplishment. However, I have the feeling that after all the filth comes out about his REAL associations with Ayers and Rezko and the other criminals who have pushed him up the ladder, his political career will be over. And not a minute too soon. What a corrupt empty shell obama is!
