Its hard to understand what has happened to the people of Zimbabwe unless you see it first hand. Millions of refugees have spilled into South Africa, Botswana and other neighboring countries, millions more are stranded in Zimbabwe where a few billion dollars might pay for a loaf of bread.
Its hard to believe that in 2008 a government, any government, has so squandered a country like Zimbabwe’s assets that the people are going without food, and fuel.
Zimbabwe’s diaspora is literally keeping the country alive.
Those that have fled the country are now working for near nothing to raise whatever they can to buy food and carry it on their backs to family and friends remaining in Zimbabwe. Many are stopped by the army and have the food confiscated.
Today the Red Cross called for $26.6 million in contributions to help it meet the growing need. Over 5 million people (roughly half the remaining population) will suffer from the food shortage by the end of the year.
