Tough Week for War Supporters

Oh, where to start? First, for a view from the Boots on the Ground, the Op-Ed piece in the NYT by a group of 82nd Airborne infantrymen and non-coms fresh from the fighting who call the debate in Washington “surreal” and say that “To believe that Americans, with an occupying force that long ago outlived its reluctant welcome, can win over a recalcitrant local population and win this counterinsurgency is far-fetched.”

Which may have something to do with this week’s report that suicide among the troops is at record levels.

Then word comes that the central government can’t even foster the sharing of electrical power, let alone political power. This from a story in Newsweek: “Another self-inflicted wound to the country’s electrical grid is even more disturbing and calls into question the entire viability of a unified Iraq. Electrical workers around the country, under the order of local officials or threats from rogue militias, are refusing to keep to national schedules for sharing power between the provinces.”

Then our Commander Guy takes on the Vietnam analogy head-on, telling a VFW group that it would make us look really bad to lose another one like that – which has the opposite of the intended effect and invites the inevitable comparisons.

Then the NIE, variously described as “grim,” “bleak,” “damning,” “gloomy” in its assessment of the situation, prompts Sen. John Warner to call for troop withdrawals to begin.

This morning the LA Times reports that “Gen. Peter Pace, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is expected to advise President Bush to reduce the U.S. force in Iraq next year by almost half, potentially creating a rift with top White House officials and other military commanders over the course of the war.”

Finally, amidst the growing consensus that this whole thing was a terrible mistake and cannot succeed, this week’s fighting brought the total number of soldiers killed in Iraq to 3,725 and the casualties to 28,308.
