Edwards is Right: Congress Needs to Stand Firm
With April truly turning out to be the cruelest month so far this year in Iraq for American troops (death toll past 100 in the deadliest month so far this year) and increasingly clear signs that we are enmeshed an an Iraqi civil war that cannot be won by the U.S., it is our duty as American citizens to push our lawmakers to end this tragic fiasco as soon as possible.
We cannot allow the end game to become a prolonged and agonizing affair. Innocent people are dying.
The scenario that is developing from the current political process is unacceptable. Bush will veto the Democrat’s funding bill because of timelines and conditions, then Congress will send him a “clean” bill that will give him a free hand to continue the war.
As the LA Times reports, “That noisy script… is just a prelude to a debate — under conditions likely to be more difficult for Bush — that could turn into a decisive moment for the course of the war.”
That debate would be the one taking place this fall, after General Petreaus has provided the promised unvarnished look at prospects for “winning” the war and whether the “surge” has succeeded. Supporters of the war have thus far been able to point to a moderate decrease in violence in Baghdad as proof that the additional troops and new tactics are working, but many say that is because the Mahdi Army has been laying low.
However, according to a story in the New York Times, “the militia might be emerging from two months of self-imposed dormancy.” Not only that, but our supposed ally, the government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, appears to be “sabotaging the military to achieve sectarian goals,” according to a Washington Post story, “… the Iraqi prime minister’s office is playing a leading role in the arrest and removal of senior Iraqi army and national police officers, some of whom had apparently worked too aggressively to combat violent Shiite militias.”
Can it be any more clear that the U.S. military is being used by the Shiites in their civil war against the Sunnis?
Congress can in no way justify sending a “clean” spending bill to Bush by in effect saying “we tried” and then waiting for more bad news to build up and an ambiguous report from Gen. Petraeus in September before renewing efforts to end our involvement in this civil war. By then, the argument goes, the situation will have deteriorated enough for the Democrats to be able to peel off enough Republican votes to be able to lay the law down to our petulant Commander in Chief.
There has been enough cowardice and duplicity in “Operation Iraqi Freedom.” It’s time to stand up and say no more.
John Edwards’ is right: Congress must stand firm. When Bush vetoes, Congress must send him another funding bill with a binding plan to end the war. And that means we’ve got to speak out now.
