Monday’s Top Stories

First, Cindy Sheehan is still in Texas with tons of supporters that have joined her both online and in Crawford. Thanks to netroots coverage of the protest, Cindy has made it into the MSM and she is on the verge of forcing somebody in the administration to respond.
Check out her new site with a video [...]

Support First Book in Amazon.com’s Nonprofit Innovation Awards

Amazon.com just announced the 10 finalists for the Nonprofit Innovation Awards. These finalists will now compete to see who can raise the most money in the next 8 weeks (the contest ends September 30th). The winner will then receive a matching donation of up to $1 million from Amazon.com. This is a great program aimed at raising money for many excellent non-profit organizations. Here’s a description from their site:

Vote for your favorites by donating up to $1,000 to each through Amazon.com. All 10 nonprofits will keep the funds they raise; the organization that raises the highest dollar amount through Amazon.com by September 30, 2005, will be awarded a matching grant of up to $1 million from Amazon.com.

Of the ten finalists (which are all great organizations), we would like to express our support for First Book. Here’s a quick description of what they do:

First Book’s mission is to provide children from low-income families with the opportunity to read and own their first new books. First Book’s goal is not just to fight illiteracy, but to end it.

A book is a powerful tool in a child’s hands. Researchers have concluded that the number of books in a child’s home is the most critical indicator in determining whether that child becomes a reader. Yet more than two-thirds of children living in poverty do not have a single book in their homes. First Book’s innovative network brings books to children in over 3,000 communities. With this nationally recognized system, First Book has distributed 32 million books through existing literacy programs, improving these programs and reaching the children who need help the most.

First Book is a national non-profit organization with a strong localized organizational model. Funds and books are distributed to children through local chapters (“Advisory Boards”) made up of individuals “who can best identify the strengths and needs of their community and provide an ongoing supply of new books to children from low-income famileis in community-based programs.” This is true grassroots organizing for a great cause.

Each dollar that you give goes a long way toward helping children in low-income families get the chance to read. In fact, for as little as 10 cents a day ($36 total), you can give a child a chance to read a new book every month for one year. And if we can raise enough money for First Book through Amazon’s Nonprofit Innovation Award contest, then each dollar that you donate is doubled.

I strongly believe in the importance of reading at a young age and that’s why I think that First Book is such an important non-profit organization. First Book has been making a huge impact on the lives of millions of children since they were formed in 1992. With our help, they can insure that this and future generations of children will not be plagued by an epidemic of illiteracy.
