Too Hot Not To Handle

Last night I attended a screening of HBO’s upcoming documentary about global warming, “Too Hot Not To Handle”. The documentary was Executive Produced by Laurie David (of StopGlobalWarming.org) and features interviews with many of the leading scientists and researchers studying the causes and consequences of global warming.

The film is divided into two parts. In the first section, it uses scientific data and visual representations of climate change to conclusively prove that global warming is real and that it is happening. There were audible gasps from the audience when photographic comparisons of glaciers from 100 years ago and today were shown on the screen – in at least one place, an ice buildup that used to be 18 feet thick is now simply gone.

The film also did a really good job proving that the consequences of global warming are happening now. From higher intensity hurricanes to massive heatwaves (Chicago in 1995, Paris and the rest of Europe in 2003) to a higher frequency of destructive forest fires, these are real climactic events that are occuring more frequently and at a higher intensity. By the end of the first section of the film, there was no question in my mind that global warming is a fact and that we need to act right now.

And that’s why I really liked the second part of the film – because it showed us things that people have done and that we can do to stop this problem from becoming a huge global catastrophe. Much of the solutions focused on cars – driving hybrids, using cleaner fuel, etc… There was also a great demonstration about what cities like Portland, Oregon have done to encourage businesses to adopt more environmentally efficient practices. And one of the key themes throughout these “solutions” was not just that we have to do this to save the environment, but that it makes economic sense as well – businesses and individuals are saving money by using fewer resources – and as Robert Kennedy Jr. pointed out in his speech to the screening audience introducing the film, if people can save $300-400 a year on gas by driving cars with higher fuel efficiency, that has the same economic impact as Bush’s tax cut.

This is a film that everyone should see – it’s a worldwide problem that Americans have a responsibility to take on. This is also not a partisan issue (or at least it shouldn’t be) – everyone benefits from these techniques that increase economic efficiency and lessen our negative impact on the environment and everyone loses when changing weather patterns and natural disasters increasingly disrupt our way of life.

The film “Too Hot Not To Handle” airs on Earth Day, Saturday April 22nd – check out the film’s website for times and for more resources about global warming.

Hopefully global warming is real, as we are coming to the end of 10,000 years of a warm era. The history of the earth shows millions upon millions of years of ice ages, interupted by short slices of warm periods roughly 10,000 years in duration.

People move to Florida because it is warmer. Why do you think global warming would be a bad thing? If there is global warming, we could plant crops in Canada on the once frozen tundra.

Earth temps, amazingly, actually coincide with fluctuations in energy given off by the sun.

Bjorn Lomborg’s “Skeptical Environmentalist” has real science in it.

The vast majority of the scientific establishment believes that greenhouse gas emissions have significantly impacted global climate change that has occured since the industrial revolution. However, Hollywood is a HORRIBLE spokesperson for the cause of cutting these emissions. Most Americans don’t trust them, they have very little scietific validity, and are often hypocritical in their arguments, For instance, Laurie David drives a hybirid to the airport, but then takes a private jet to wherever she wants to go very frequently. Consequently, her “CO2 footprint” is likely to be a billion times higher the the normal American’s.

Did you know that while the shoreline ice is receding in Greenland and the Antarctica Peninsula due to higher surface temps, the overrall volume of ice on the continents is increasing?

Receding ice will reveal new arable land that we need to farm in order to feed the world’s growing population. Hmmmm.

This stuff is really too complicated for public debate. For example, the increase in big forest fires in the western USA is generally attributed not just to drought but also to extensive fire suppression efforts during the 20th century, leading to fuel accumulation. Before fire suppression efforts became really effective in the 1930s, there were lots of big fires just as there are now.

As I read the other responses I feel troubled. Many people believe global warming is a good thing. And this belief that the planet warms itself up every hundred years, it’s scary. I wish more of you had data to support your ideas. For example Jon wrote “If there is global warming, we could plant crops in Canada on the once frozen tundra.” How do we know that the land is useable? How can the planet be balanced if there is no ice? The climate will continue rising to the point that we won’t be able to plant any crops. Think about it. I have tons of data supporting that fact. Feel free to contact me if you want it, dsaraiva_@hotmail.com
I’m no scientist, but I’ll tell you this, I’m no fool either. We are destroying the only thing that we have that’s more valuable than all our belongings and that is the Earth. Our home.

Is there any way to get a copy of Too Hot Not To Handle for my classroom? WE have been talking about global warning in my 5th grade class, and after watching this documentary I had to have it!

    Thank you!

Hi! I am very much interested in viewing this video but unfortunately we do not get HBO in Canada and I have no way in seeing it. I am also a Gr. 5 French Immersion teacher and would love to show it to my class.
    Please reply

I came across it channel surfing last night, and hope they put out a DVD of it soon.

First, the film REFUTES most popular uniformed arguments including “global warming is a good thing”. The negative consequences of global warming (immediate, short term, and long term) all outweight any short-sighted benefits.

Second, complex issues like this *should* be publicly debated because they do have immediate, short term, and long term consequences. Complexity is not an excuse to stop the debate.

Finally: “Bjorn Lomborg’s “Skeptical Environmentalist” has real science in it.” However, Lomborg is a *political* scientist, and the *environmental* science was misinterpreted and misrepresented– http://www.csicop.org/scienceandmedia/environmentalist/

(Don’t let the name of the website throw you. It’s purpose is to debunk the hype surrounding “paranormal and fringe-science claims”.)

“Lomborg selectively examines issues or problems that support his thesis that the state of the environment is improving, while ignoring other issues that refute his claims… In other cases, he over-simplifies, commits gross-generalizations, or fails to discuss the issue of uncertainty and subjectivity in the data that he presents.

“He uncritically and selectively cites literature, much of it non-peer-reviewed, and misinterprets or misunderstands the previously published scientific research… Several scientists observe that most of Lomborg’s 3,000 citations are to media articles and secondary sources.

“Lomborg’s research is conceptually flawed… In several cases he uses statistical measures that are not valid indicators of the problems he reports are improving.”

These are criticisms of Lomborg’s research *methods*, thereby leaving his conclusions in doubt.

I meant to say “the film REFUTES most popular unINformed arguments”.

In Canada, the film is being broadcast on premium subscription digital cable channels. “The Movie Network” in Ontario, Quebec, and Atlantic Canada. “Movie Central” in the prairies and western Canada.

    http://www.moviecentral.ca/cgi-bin/schedule2/2006/show_nfo4WE_HD.cgi?F18409s

I wasn’t able to find it on the the French-language premium channel “Super Ecran”, most likely because it was made-for-U.S.-cable and did not have time to be translated in Canada.

The earth was largely covered in ice thousands of years ago. It disappeared before the United States pulled out of Kyoto.
It disappeared before the combustion engine. It disappeared before Laurie David decided that this was going to be her cause ‘celeb.
    It disappeared before Bush.
    How did THAT happen?

The sixties was one of the cooler decades and it was also a monster decade for emissions. (No catalytic converter yet.)
It was so cool that scientists (many of which are the same scientists as today’s chicken littles) warned of an impending ICE AGE!!!
There was a show hosted by Leonard Nimoy, in the seventies, called “In Search Of.”
There was an entire show in which scientists scared the hell out of you showing ice covered tundras, with wind howling,
people ice skating in Florida!!! You know, the typical propaganda that will gain scientists millions in study grants.
Many top magazines, including Time magazine, had issues devoted to it… (funny how they are never doing retrospectives on those covers) and EARTH DAY was created largely in response to GLOBAL COOLING!!!!!!!!
Funny how that little tidbit is brushed aside.

Man not only can’t predict the weather – WE CAN”T CONTROL IT!!!@!!!!
Any scientists who will look you straight in the eyes and tell you what the weather will be like in 30 years is an absolute LIAR!
He is guessing. The predictions are based on climate models which are seriously flawed and can be consciously or subconsciously manipulated to reach a desired conclusion.

This is a pathetic attempt to confiscate and control wealth… and anyone who believes otherwise is a useful idiot.

The other features of Magnaflow catalytic converters include that these are custom- prepared for a direct factory-replacement fit. There is a considerable increase in the surface area over which the exhaust flows, resulting in significantly reduced limitations. All thanks to the honeycomb-patterned internal catalyst. Moreover, there is no need of welding or pipe bending when the Catalytic Converter bolts into place.
